I got married on August 8th. Everything went very well. We went to Aruba for our honeymoon and it was great. It was 90 & sunny every day. The water was a perfect temp & color. The food was great. The shows were good, etc... We also purchased a timeshare package while we were there. For my bachelor party we rented a boat & about 18 of us went on Lake Minnetonka for 8 hrs. I was blackout drunk about 4 hrs into it (3 pm). Then we came back to my house. During that time some of us decided it would be a great idea to play a cash game. I was dealing backwards & arguing w/ Jeremy (thevosh, voss1313's bro) before finally realizing I was wrong. Later he decided to fire up the weed whacker past midnight & weed whack a penis into my lawn. I was asleep by then. Thankfully he didn't do the greatest job in the dark & you couldn't really tell what it was.

Here's 1 pic from the wedding:

This is my wife Paula & I doing a nice ninja turtle pose. I was obsessed with the ninja turtles when I was young so my brothers gave me a ninja turtle shirt during their best man speech. Maybe I'll post some other pics another time. Some people have requested that I post more pics on my blog but it can be time consuming.

As for poker, I haven't played a whole lot. There was 1 week when I was really sick & didn't play at all. Then I had the wedding & honeymoon & obv didn't play during that. July 16th I decided to stop playing pokerstars, at least for now. There's so many ignorant regs who don't table select that you have to constantly babysit them by keeping an eye on the lobbies. This takes away a ton of focus from your tables, a bit too much w/ 4 sites going imo. Whether this helps my hourly remains to be seen and will be tough to tell due to the high variance of the games I play. However, if nothing else the games have been less stressful & more enjoyable w/o Stars. I'm pretty confident in my game. I've reviewed poker tracker stats of a bunch of top players & my #s are very similar to all of them. I love when people tell me I can't play post-flop. Of all the players my went to showdown/won at showdown #s were the best.

I don't have the time to post all my stats but my total profit for the year is at $208,188.33

Cake has been pretty quiet lately so FTP has easily been my #1 site volume-wise lately. I've done ok there. Their sharkscope was very screwy during a bunch of updates. It missed a nice upswing of mine but that's ok because it will just help feed the ignorant donks' opinion of my play recently.

As far as Brett Favre goes, I think he's kind of a d-bag but I'm glad the Vikings got him because he should be an upgrade over what we had. I think the Vikes are 1 of the favorites to win the NFC this year. The Eagles are gonna be really tough though.

Now on to a more serious subject:

My brother is running a race in support of 1 of his best friends, who has colon cancer. All donations are greatly appreciated. I'll just leave you with the story my brother wrote on the race homepage:

Hello,

I recently joined a team for the 18th Annual Rivertown Shuffle here in Winona that will be held on Friday, September 18th. This event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and is highlighted by luminaries placed on the bike path around Lake Winona. One of my very best friends, Joe Vogel, has been chosen to be one of this years Person's of Hope for this event.

In May of 2006 Joe was diagnosed with colon cancer. At age 28, the thought of cancer shouldn't even enter one's mind. But Joe faced the battle head on like a true champion. Joe did the chemo and all the treatments and side effects that came along with it and eventually was back to life before the cancer. Unfortunately, a few months back his colon cancer came back and was in his brain. Once again Joe's positive attitude got him through the radiation treatments and a Gamma Knife procedure.

During the 2 months that Joe was receiving his treatments for the brain tumors, the cancer spread significantly to his spine, lungs, and possibly liver. At this moment Joe is on Round 2 of chemo out of 6 for these areas. Joe is 31 years old and has had to deal with more than anybody should ever have to deal with in their entire life. His attitude is unbelievable and the way he's fought is heroic to say the least.

Joe is the reason I've decided to raise money for this event. In honor of Joe Vogel. I set our initial goal at $1000 and to be honest I think we can reach that no problem. So I hope we can raise that goal in the coming weeks.

Congrats Hub!

You're not missing anything by not playing on Stars. I've pretty much stopped playing 119+ 6 max. There are always at least 2 good players loading, usually more.

I'm totally blind, and wondering if you've ever heard of a blind person playing professional poker, online or otherwise?

Actually there is at least one, Hal Lubarsky, who got some TV coverage during the 2007 WSOP ME, if my memory serves me right.
AFAIK he's also a pro online player.

Congrats on the wedding - pic. looks good.

I notice your yearly profit is just over 200k. Looks like your total profit for the year maybe fairly lower than last years at this rate, no? Wondering why this may be, harder competition? Not many hours played?

Also, when you play poker, do you play multiple sites simultaneously? If so, how do you arrange the tables - is there a way to do it auto. so they all tile, because when I try they overlap and I have to manually move the tables around from the 2 differed poker rooms. (I use only one monitor).

The games are much tougher. Also, I've ran like complete ass at my highest stakes, & it's tough to win overall pre rakeback when that happens. Last year I made $270K pre rakeback. This year I'm breaking even pre rakeback so far.

I play all my sites simultaneously. There is nothing you can do other than move the tables around manually.

Re: voss
I like how Hub texts me to respond on his blog. Ha

As of about 10 days ago I am no longer under Hub. Things have been going good.

I don't update my blog because I'm extremely lazy. If I noticed that over 100 people read it every time I would update a lot more. I might start a twitter account(gay i know), but I feel like I would update it a lot more with quick notes. I also plan on making a blog entry of a final wrap up of the staking.

Thanks for your interest,

VOS

I'm curiuos..
you state your profit for the year as 208k or so. I'm curious tho, that w/o all the great rakeback deals you have, what your actual profit from sng's themselves are? Anotherwords, if there was no rakeback, how much are you actually up this year from playing sng's? And an even better question would be, with only receiving the 27% from tilt and 33% from cake, what would your profit be? I think this info would really be helpful to the grinder who doesn't have better than normal rakeback deals to have an understanding of what is actually attainable in today's climate. Thanks.

Re: I'm curiuos..
You can check previous posts for that because I usually post that at the bottom. I think I'm down about $6K pre rakeback this year, but that # is a bit misleading. If I didn't have the special rakeback deal I have w/ Cake I probably wouldn't have played any super turbos at all (where I lost about $30K this year) & would table select cake, which I don't do with my deal. I can't disclose my exact rakeback % on cake, but you can take some guesses & do some calculations.

Also, keep in mind I made $270K before any rakeback in 2008 & about $160K before any rakeback in 2007. It shows you not only how crazy high stakes variance can be, but how much tougher the games are. I know of other top players who are also down pre rakeback this year.

SNG Formats
I wanted to ask you about your thoughts on the different SNG formats [6-max]-(Reg,Turbo,Super Turbo). I realize the profits on the super turbo's come almost only from the rakeback, but how does that compare with profits generated from the Reg, and maybe even Turbo speed where your ROI is much higher + rakeback but requries more time to complete.

Also, I know you probably dont have much experience here, but how do you think this comes into play in the lower stakes at the $10-$30 levels. I mean the rake collected is so less, and in return the rakeback would be very minor, so would it be beneficial to play turbo/s.turbos here?

And when your playing, which formats do you play and how much of each of them. I know you stopped Super turbos recently, but what about before that? How did your average sessions looks like.

Thanks

Re: SNG Formats
In terms of long run profit I would rate them as follows: turbo, regular speed, super turbo. BTW, your ROI is higher in regulars compared to turbos.

As for as the lower levels, the rake collected may be less, but it's still basically the same in proportion to the buy-in. On one end, I think super turbo profitability vs the other formats is better at the lower stakes because a much larger % of people understand push/fold compared to the higher stakes, and this is where most of your profit comes from in super turbos (other than rakeback). However, when at the lower levels you should be focusing on improving your game & moving up in stakes. Super turbos aren't going to improve you a whole hell of a lot so I'd still advise against playing them for the most part.

Before I would say my sessions were probably 40% super turbo, 50% turbo, & 10% regular speed. On cake alone it was more like 55-60% super turbo. Now I'd say it's more like 90% turbo & 10% regular speed.

Congrats on the marriage.I guess Im a new unofficial student of yours.I sent you an email last week or so.I just wanted to make sure that if you read it you didnt think I was asking to be staked.Im not sure if Im even worthy to be in that catagory yet.But due to the info you share here I will definately become a more rounded player.Your posts on table selection should greatly increase my profit margin. Thanks for opening my eyes to it.

Super Turbos
I have noticed you started playing super turbo's again. Any big reason for this? Are the games slower on Cake now?

Re: Super Turbos
I'll talk about this in the blog but basically I have strict rules w/ them so I try not to play any -EV pre rakeback super turbos & don't add any with a certain # of tables open. This cuts the variance down a bit & assures that super turbos don't take too much focus away from my other tables. I think they're more profitable than a FTP if you're strict about it. The only problem is I've noticed I have to babysit ignorant Cake regs like sp0rde & akvalang. It just baffles me that people w/ 33% rakeback are still arrogant & ignorant enough to not table select super turbos. It's sad that I have multiples of their rakeback & still table select better. I guess when some people are running like Gods they think they're just that good & don't have the humility to chalk it up to variance.

Voss1313, Kenny05, Hold Em Manager
JHUB what up? Wondering if you're still backing Voss1313. I know he's been running pretty crappy. His sharky is all over the place. Hey, what's up with the self proclaimed THE BEST 6-MAX PLAYER IN THE INTERNET? Why does he start up a blog then doesn't update it?

Important questions; I multi table (12) and try to use Tournament Indicator and/or Hold Em Manager. But with so many tables open my computer freezes or lagges for 2 seconds. I can only run 4 tables. What do you do Hub?

I enjoy your blog because it's honest and not full of fluff like most others. Anyhow, you should post your blog on your own website and sell some products. I would love to buy a JHUB shirt or a book/video you produce. A little extra money doesn't hurt 'ya know?

Thanks a million HUB. :-)

Re: Voss1313, Kenny05, Hold Em Manager
Voss built up enough for his own bankroll so he's on his own now. He just doesn't play $300+ but hopes to be very soon. He's doing fine though. I'm not sure what his pre rakeback #s are but he makes plenty in rakeback for a good living.

As far as Kenny's blog, when he started it he planned on updating it but then he realized it just wasn't for him.

As for hold em manager lagging while mass multi tabling, I had the same problem. Because of it I didn't use a hud for all of last year other than the 1st couple months, & then partly into this year. Now I use PT3 because it seems to work better for me. It might be because you're running too many other prgrams at once. If you're only running hold em manager & the sites you play on I think it should be fine. Otherwise maybe you need to clean your database? I'm not sure what it's called in HEM but it's called housekeeping in PT3 & once your database gets big you pretty much need to do it daily to prevent major lagging. I'd try that or try to contact HEM support.

As for my own website selling t-shirts I'd do it but I think you might be the only person purchasing one. :)
